The Gold Standard Treatment for Otosclerosis

The stapedotomy operation is a minimally invasive microsurgical procedure designed to restore hearing by replacing the immobilized stapes bone with a small prosthesis. This allows sound to travel normally to the inner ear, effectively reversing conductive hearing loss.

Key Benefits of Stapedectomy:

  • Highly successful – over 95% of patients experience significant hearing improvement.

  • Minimally invasive – performed through the ear canal, with no external incisions.

  • Outpatient procedure – takes only an hour, and patients go home the same day.

  • Permanent solution – usually there is no need for hearing aids after successful surgery.

What is Otosclerosis?

Otosclerosis is a progressive condition where abnormal bone growth in the middle ear fixates the stapes bone, preventing it from vibrating properly. This disrupts sound transmission, leading to conductive hearing loss. If left untreated, otosclerosis can worsen over time, potentially affecting the inner ear and causing mixed hearing loss.

Symptoms of Otosclerosis

You may not realize you have otosclerosis until you start struggling
to hear certain backgrounds sounds like fans or soft speech.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Gradual hearing loss (especially low-pitched sounds).

  • Difficulty understanding speech at normal volume.

  • Difficulty understanding people talking from another room.

  • Tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, or hissing in the ears).

  • Occasional dizziness or imbalance.

If you're experiencing these symptoms, a consultation with Dr. Nazarian can help determine the best course of treatment.

What Happens During Stapedectomy?

Stapedectomy is a delicate surgical procedure performed under magnification to address conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis.

It aims to restore hearing by replacing the immobilized stapes bone with a prosthetic device, allowing sound vibrations to be transmitted more effectively to the inner ear.
